The deck used to play Red Dog is the standard, fifty two card variety. The game may be played with anywhere from one to eight decks, with an increasing number of decks decreasing the house edge — the house’s advantage begins at 3.155% with one deck, but falls to 2.751% when eight decks are used. This is in contrast with some other casino card games, such as blackjack, where a higher number of decks used will increase the house edge.

The game only uses three cards at a time, which are ranked as in poker, with aces high. Suit is irrelevant. A wager is placed, and two cards are placed face up on the table, with three possible outcomes:

  • If the cards are consecutive in number (for example, a four and a five, or a jack and a queen), the hand is a push and the player’s wager is returned.
  • If the two cards are of equal value, a third card is dealt. If the third card is of the same value, then the payout for the player is 11:1, otherwise the hand is a push.
  • If the two cards difference is greater than one place (for example, a three and an eight), then a spread is announced which determines the payoff, pending the outcome of a third card which will be dealt. If this third card’s value falls between the first two, the player wil receive a payoff according to the spread, otherwise the bet is lost. Before dealing the third card, the player has the option to double his bet.

Okay, if you’re still reading I’m assuming it’s because you want a little detail. It’s still pretty simple, but here it is: the player only gets an edge when the spread is 7 or more. This is actually quite obvious. At Spread 7, 7 cards will give you a winning hand. And since there are 13 cards from Deuce to Ace (2 ,3 ,4 ,5 ,6 ,7 ,8, 9, 10, J, Q, K, A), that means that only 6 cards will cause you to lose.

Spread 7 gives the player about a 54% chance of winning and it gets better from there on up to around 85% at Spread 11. So the strategy is to only Double on the Spreads that give you an edge, namely 7 through 11. Spreads below 7 give the house an increasingly stiff edge and should be avoided.

Different payouts are awarded depending on the number of credits played and the winning combination(s).Players begin by making a wager that is made by selecting the desired amount of chips at the bottom of the casino game window. Pair Hand:
A pair hand occurs when the dealer draws two cards of the same value (for example, two Kings). In this case, the dealer will automatically draw a third card. If the value of the third card is the same as the previous two, all players win with a payoff of 11:1. If the value of the third card is different from the previous two, the hand is declared a push and the player’s original wager is returned.

Consecutive Hand:
When the value of the two cards drawn by the dealer are consecutive (for example, a 5 and 6, or Queen and King) this is called a consecutive hand. In this case, the dealer will not draw a third card, the hand is declared a push and the player’s original wager is returned.

Non-Consecutive Hand:
Most hands in Red Dog fall into this category. When the dealer draws two cards which are not consecutive or the same, this is called a non-consecutive hand. In this case, the dealer will announce the spread between the two drawn cards and place a Red Dog on the table indicating the spread. The spread is number of values that fall between the values of the two cards drawn by the dealer. For example, if the two cards drawn by the dealer were 2 and Jack, the spread is 8 since there are eight values between the 2 and Jack (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10).

When the spread is announced and marked (by the Red Dog), players have the option to make a raise wager, equal to the amount of the original wager, by clicking on the “RAISE” prior to the dealer drawing the third card. Alternatively, players may stand on their original wager amount by clicking on the “STAND” button. Once the player has clicked on “RAISE” or “STAND” the dealer draws a third card.

Players win if the value of the third card falls between the value of the two cards originally drawn by the dealer. However, if the third card drawn is identical to either of the first two, the bet is lost. There is never a push in non-consecutive hands.

The house edge in Red Dog poker is 2.8% and there is very little strategy that a player can employ. The only real option a player can control is whether to place an additional bet before the turn of the third card. The simple mathematical strategy to play is not to place an additional wager if the spread is below seven as it has a negative expectation. However betting if the spread is over spread seven is a good idea as a player can gain a small advantage. Following this system will not make you rich, as it involves only the 1/1 even money part of the game, but it is the best opportunity to show a short term profit.If the two cards maintain a spread (they are not equal or consecutive) the player is allowed to choose to either ‘raise’ or not raise. To raise means to double your initial bet. This is the only opportunity to alter your bet in red dog, and as a rule it’s the most important aspect of a good strategy.

The spread is equal to the number of cards that exist between the two cards dealt, not including them. A 4 and a 7 have a spread of 2. A 9 and a King have a spread of 3. When the third card is dealt, if it lands between the initial two cards (within the spread) the player wins. Standard red dog rules state that a 1 card spread pays 5 to 1, a spread of 2 pays at 4 to 1, a spread of 3 pays at 2 to 1, and every larger spread pays even money.

Your best red-dog strategy is to raise on spreads of seven or more. As you can see from the following table, the player holds the statistical edge for any spread of seven or more. Larger payouts, while available for bets on lower spreads, maintain a house edge of over 20% and do not represent a good playing strategy.

Red-Dog poker rules are very basic, as there isn’t much to the game. You may have read earlier that with each variation on classic poker, the greater the changes the less skill is needed for the game. Red dog seems to be the epitome of this statement. The cards are ranked just as they are in poker, aces are high, suit is irrelevant. The first player is dealt two cards by the dealer after placing a bet (sometimes referred to as an ante, but the amount can vary). If the two cards are consecutive (i.e. 4,5) the hand is considered a push and the bet is returned. If the cards are equal a third card is dealt. If it is the same as the first two cards the player wins and is paid 11 to 1. Otherwise the hand is a push. Some variations of the game allow you to bet on whether the third card on two equals is higher or lower than the value of the equal cards.

When there is spread between the two original cards, the spread or difference announced by the dealer and the player has the option of placing an additional bet (up to the amount of the original wager) that the third card will fall between the spread. When dealt, if the third card falls between the spread of the original two cards, the player wins the bet. In case the two cards would be consecutive, like a four and a five, the hand is over and you get your wager back, according to the Red Dog rules. In Red Dog Poker, ff the two cards are a Pair the betting will stop, but you still have the chance to get a 11:1 payout if the third card has the same value as the first two, which is a fun part of Red Dog Poker. The most interesting part in Red Dog Poker is betting on the spread. In this second optional bet you basically go for a bonus payout. In Red Dog Poker, the odds on spread bets are set by the casino.
